What should I do with a leaking water heater?

In this video, Jim Munson, a plumber in Salt Lake City, discusses about leaking water heater.

“A lot of people ask me again, “what should I do if I have a leaky water heater?” The answer to that is it depends on where it’s leaking.

I’d have to say about 80% to 85% of the time when I go out to look at a leaking water heater it is actually the water heater leaking. If the water heater’s leaking there’s not a thing you can do about it except replace it.

The other 15% of the time sometimes it’s the temperature and pressure relief valve that leaking or it’s the fitting on top that are leaking or it’s the boiler valve on the bottom where you drain it that’s leaking. Sometimes those are leaking and you can get away with just having to replace those, but most of the time it’s the water heater that’s leaking.
