Water Conditioners
In this video, Jim Munson, a plumber in Salt Lake City, discusses about water conditioners.
“A lot of people say “Hey there’s a new softener out there that doesn’t use much salt or uses no salt”. Well I guess it all depends on your definition. There is no such thing as a water softener that takes the hardness out. There are different types of things out there.
There’s this one thing called PureGuard and it’s a citrus base. You run it through a filter and it adds citrus — lemon juice, orange juice — to your water. Not enough to make it taste different but it does make it so the hardness in your water doesn’t stick to anything. But it doesn’t take the hardness out. So when you’re washing your dishes it still leaves spots, when you’re washing your clothes it still leaves spots so it makes your clothes wear out quicker. But it does a great job on your plumbing. It makes it so it doesn’t stick inside your plumbing so that does have a benefit there.
The other thing to have is what’s called an MP3 — that’s what I call it. It’s little white resin and it’s made in two places, Texas and Florida, they have a patent on it. It does a great job. We use it for boilers. We don’t want hard water deposits to get into boilers or water systems or water heaters. It works great but again it does not take the hardness out so it is not a true water softener. It is a water conditioner and you can put a saltless water conditioner in there.
So it does save you on salt because it doesn’t use salt, and it definitely has some benefits to it, but it doesn’t truly take the hardness out so it doesn’t have all the benefits as soft water. But it’s great. I use them all the time, especially in systems where people don’t want to have salt but they want some protection.
