You may be in the market for a furnace replacement or an air conditioner replacement, and you may have some questions. One of the questions you may be asking yourself is:
I have a such & such size air conditioner or furnace, can’t I just take the old one out, and put the same size unit back in?
To answer that question, first we have to define some things.
Sizing
Sizing is critical. For furnaces, it’s the number of BTUs, and Tonnage. For Air Conditioners it is the SEER and Tonnage. Depending on these variables, it determines what specific unit you have.
BTUs
BTU stands for British Thermal Unit. It determines the amount of gas required for running the unit. Higher BTUs, means higher gas usage. For example, a furnace or a boiler is going to have a higher BTU rating than a water heater.
SEER
SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. It is a rating that determines how efficient your unit is running. Essentially, how much energy it has to output to reach the temperature desired in your home. The minimum SEER allowed is 13 SEER, with the highest currently being 21.
Tonnage
Tonnage or a Ton, actually has nothing to do with weight. Tonnage determines how much heat a unit moves. One ton, moves 12,000 BTUhs an
Every home needs to be sized accordingly.
