Should I change my own faucets?

In this video, Jim Munson, a plumber in Salt Lake City, discusses if you should change faucets on your own.

“A lot of people do ask me that. They want to change a faucet or several faucets in their house and they say “Should I call a plumber or is there something I can do myself?” Well let’s put it like this; if you’re a pretty good handyman and you know your skills and your technical abilities, yes, some can be very easy. Others, especially in older plumbing, they give you a hard one. Especially when they’ve been on there for 20 30 years and they’ve been seized up. You’ve literally got to cut them away — without breaking your sink.

So the answer to that is look up there, if it’s a really old faucet you might want to get a plumber there to at least get it off so you don’t break your sink. But if it looks like it’s fairly new and not so rusted and you have a plumbers wrench — it’s a kind of a thing with a handle on it and a little curve on there and you can put it on there. Underneath the sink you’re very limited in room. Sometimes I have a hard time getting them off — and I’m the expert.

So just know your limitations and if it gets a little too hard give us a call. Know where your water turn-off is so you can get to it in case there’s a problem. Other than that I encourage people all the time to try and do it themselves if they think they can. Just know a good plumber and have his phone number ready just in case you get in trouble.

They can be pretty heavy and pretty gnarly and you’ve got to get the flue right because most times they go up and out.
