“The benefits of putting in a programmable thermostat as opposed to a non-programmable thermostat is with a programmable thermostat you can set it for times that you wake up, time you leave, so it can run at different temperatures and turns itself on and off. You basically just set it and forget it. You don’t have to worry about changing temperatures or anything like that, which can make it more energy efficiency. If you’re gone for the majority of the day you can set your thermostat to have your house run at a cooler temperature, you’re not using as much electricity or gas.

Whenever I talk with customer about the option of a programmable as opposed to a non-programmable, I look at their usage. If there’s someone home all the time, a programmable might not be as beneficial to them because that temperature is not going to change.

But if you know someone is always going to be gone at the same time every day, a programmable thermostat could save quite a bit of money on your field costs and for utilities over the course of a year.
