Plumber Salt Lake City Utah video #18:
Do you install water softeners?
In this video, Jim Munson, a plumber in Salt Lake City, discusses if they install water softeners.
“We install water softeners. We have several different types of water softeners. The main thing to remember about softeners is the size. They’re usually measured in grains –I don’t know why– or cubes. So you’ve got a cube, which is a one foot cube, and that’s how much resin is in the softener. So if you have only two people at home, generally one cube is going to work. Three, four, five people, a cube and a half. Anybody above five, you want two cubes of resin and softener.
Which makes the cylinder where you put it in quite big when you put two cubes in there. Usually you want to fill it up two thirds, you want to leave the last third empty so when it does a regeneration it will have time to move up and separate itself through there. So you never fill the cylinder up with resin.
There are different types of resin; there’s black, there’s brown, there’s golden, there’s white, all sorts of different resins. They all pretty much work the same way. You just want to get a good one that’s going to give you quality and last for a long time. We generally deal with the best resin we can get so it makes it sure it will last the longest.
Just a little side note, what kills resin is chlorine. Most principalities have chlorine in their water. If we have chlorine in the water and you don’t take that out, it will actually make the resin wear out quicker. So if you have chlorine in your water the resin generally lasts 10 to 15 years. If you have a carbon filter in front of the resin, in front of your softener, it’s going to make it last for 25 to 30 years. It literally doubles the life of the softener.
